Delays and Closures

Schools may be closed for inclement weather (snow, freezing rain, below zero temperatures, wind chills, etc) and when it is dangerous to put buses on the road. Listen to local radio stations for school closure information. Radio stations will have information by approximately 5:30 - 6:00 a.m. You can also find current information on the district website at www.finleysd.org or at www.flashnews.net

School/Bus Two-Hour Delay - On marginal days when it appears the weather will break, schools may be scheduled to start two or three hours later than normal. This allows road crews to catch up, temperatures to rise, and buses to run in daylight. Morning preschool classes will be cancelled. If conditions do not improve, running late may be changed to closure. Local radio stations will be informed of change to closure by 7:00 a.m. (if a two-hour late start was called) or by 8:00 a.m. (if a three-hour delay was called).

Early Closure - Because of the possibility of children coming home to locked houses, we will make every effort not to close schools early. However, under emergency conditions (road crews pulling out; an approaching blizzard; heating failure at school, etc.) we may need to proceed to early closure. Early closure will be announced on local radio stations, and school personnel will make every attempt to notify parents by phone.

When Bad Weather Occurs, Parents Should:

  • Listen to a local radio station
  • Dress your children warmly
  • Provide a way for children to enter home if buses run late or school closes early
