The basketball courts at Finley Elementary School, Finley Middle School and River View High School all recently received a makeover, thanks to a $200,000 Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools grant the Finley School District was awarded earlier this year.
The Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools grant is meant to help school districts improve their physical activity and nutrition offerings. The funds are supposed to help districts find more ways to keep students active at recess, while also ensuring they have the equipment needed to continue to offer healthy meals to students.
For Finley, that meant using the money to take down the unused ball wall, and put in a new basketball court with four new basketball hoops at Finley Elementary School. They were also able to use the grant to resurface all of the basketball courts at Finley Middle School and River View High School, alleviating the deep cracks that were making it hard to use the courts.
When it comes to nutrition, Finley was able to use the grant money to purchase much-needed kitchen supplies, including a salad bar chiller, a milk cooler and a new dishwasher. All of the new equipment is on site and installed.
