4/6/20 Schools Closed

4/6/20 Schools Closed for the Remainder of the Year
Posted on 04/06/2020

At 2:30 PM on April 6th, Governor Inslee announced the closure of all Washington K-12 schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, as we work to slow the spread of COVID-19. During this closure, all school buildings in the district will remain closed. While we understand that these long-term closures pose many challenges for students, staff, and families, it is pertinent that we follow the guidance of our public health authorities and not overwhelm the healthcare system.

Not being able to return to school can be disappointing news for many students who miss their friends and teachers. The extended closure also raises numerous questions for all involved. We are working quickly to answer your questions as soon as possible.

In the meantime, here is what we know now:

  • Continuous learning will continue in the same format as long as schools are closed. Our school staff is committed to partnering with families and community to support our students’ learning while they are at home.
  • As we explore further options for online learning platforms and other possibilities, we will continue to provide learning packets for Finley students in all grades. Packets will be distributed at the same designated bus stops every other Friday, beginning April 10th (see schedule below). We will post electronic copies of these packets on our website for students and families to print at home if desired. Students should return packets to the bus stops on Fridays.
  • Packets will be distributed and made available online on the following Fridays: Apr. 10, Apr. 24, May 8, May 22, and June 5.
  • Teachers and principals have been contacting families to determine each student’s access to technology at home. Principals have distributed Chromebooks to identified students at the middle and high school. If your child does not have access to a computer or similar device, and/or internet, please contact the school office and leave a message.
  • High school seniors will continue to receive support remotely from RVHS Counselor Rebekah Duty regarding opportunities to earn and document credits they need for graduation and preparing to transition to college, etc. We are working with the state’s college system to ensure smooth transitions for graduating students.
  • We will continue to provide free meals, Monday-Friday, to all children 18 years and younger. Meal delivery will continue following the current drop-off schedule and locations. You can find more details on our website at www.finleysd.org/community/COVID-19/food
  • All field trips and events, including athletics and dances, will be canceled during the extended closure. We are engaging with students to come up with creative alternatives to celebrate milestones such as prom and field days. We will keep students and families updated on these decisions so that you can plan in advance to participate.
  • The in-person graduation ceremony originally scheduled may be modified to a virtual ceremony and/or delayed. A final decision will be communicated by April 30.
  • We are awaiting information from the Governor on whether school facilities will be open to provide summer school.

Please, stay home as much as possible and stay healthy. Even while staying at home, it is important to practice excellent hygiene and sanitation. Staying home and limiting person-to-person contact appears to be making a difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19, but those measures need to continue in order to be effective long-term. As much as possible, stay home, limit trips outside for groceries, gas and essentials, and stay 6 feet apart from people outside of your home. We urge you to follow the guidance provided by the CDC and Department of Health. We will have limited staff on site at the District Office to answer phones between 8AM to 4PM, Monday-Friday. Our office can be reached at 509-586-3217. Please look for more communication coming from the district in the coming weeks, and leave a message if your phone call is not answered right away.
