Family Literacy Night in Finley

The first-ever Family Literacy Night at Finley Elementary School was a big success! On Wednesday, January 10th, parents, grandparents, and siblings joined their elementary students for an evening filled with games and activities designed to help children become the best readers they can be.

Mrs. Stephanie Bradshaw, Title I/LAP teacher at Finley Elementary, set about organizing and designing the evening for students at her school with the help from her fellow teachers in every grade level K-5.  Beginning at 6:00 PM, Finley families entered the school building to receive their “pizza ticket” to take with them to each reading station.  As students and their families rotated through the stations they chose, they received a sticker to place on a slice of their “pizza ticket.” Once a student had received at least 4 of the 8 slices on the ticket, he/she could take the ticket down to the school cafeteria to enjoy a dinner of pizza, cookies, and drinks with family members.

Mrs. Bradshaw says that she is pleased with the outcome of the evening and looks forward not only to hosting this event again next year, but also to the “Kindness Week” celebration she has planned for next week at the school.

“We had roughly 60 families attend our first Family Literacy Night, which was fantastic!" says Mrs. Bradshaw.  "It is always exciting to see so many students and parents getting excited about reading!"

Beginning this next week January 22-26, Finley Elementary will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge, where students are challenged to complete as many kind acts as possible throughout the week.  The school will have kindness spirit days for students to dress up to support being kind, a kindness door decorating contest, and a kindness recess station set up for students to make things such as paper hearts or thank you notes to give others.  Staff and students are looking forward to a fun and KIND week!
