A big thank you to Energy Northwest for hosting a fun and educational field trip to the Nine Canyon Wind Project on May 17. Fourth grade students at Finley Elementary heard a presentation from Jennifer Knighten, Energy Northwest Project Specialist, in their classroom on Friday. Following the presentation, students loaded buses at the school and traveled up the hills to the Nine Canyon Wind Project, where students were able to step inside one of the enormous turbines.
Finley Elementary School sits just down the hill from this national power project, and the wind turbines can be seen from practically any location in Finley. During the field trip, students learned how the turbines convert wind into electrical energy, as well as the benefits of this project to the Tri-Cities region. According to Energy Northwest, which owns and operates the Nine Canyon Wind Project, the 63 turbines located in southeast Kennewick are part of one of the nation’s largest public power wind projects (www.energy-northwest.com/generation/nine_canyon.php).
Make sure to check out their website to learn all about this project. Like Finley School District on Facebook to see all the photos from our field trip! |
